Killing Kennedy 2

So far the book Killing Kennedy has been great. Starting the book I knew it would be because in the beginning O’Reilly states, “This is a fact-based book and some of what you will read has never before publicly stated” (O’Reilly 3). I like this fro two reasons. The first is to know that he will reveal information that has not been revealed before. Earlier in the chapter he also stated that his family was good friends with the Kennedy’s, so it is cool to think he is an inside man. The second part I like about the quote is that its “fact based”.  Although my last book was about conspiracies, I don’t like them when that deals with the death of people. I know I’ve read things about how the Kennedy assassination was planed by the government or even about how 9/11 was planned by the government. I just think it is disrespectful when people make these claims knowing that someone’s life was involved.  Its good to know that Bill O’Reilly wont be making these types of claims.

To what I have read, the book has so far been about his early life and the beginning of his presidency, not into the assassination yet.  An interesting fact I have learned is that JFK was in the navy and had a close death experience. Kennedy was on a small war vessel, a PT-109, patrolling these islands around Japan. At a point the boat sees a Japanese vessel coming right at them. O’Reilly describes it, “The skipper sees the ship and spins the wheel hard, trying to turn his boat towards the rampaging destroyer to fire torpedoes from point-blank range- either that, or the Americans will be destroyed” (O’Reilly 20). There boat does get crushed from the vessel. Kennedy and the rest of his men were injured and had to stay on an island for days until they were rescued. Its really an interesting thing to learn about Kennedy. For this I predict that O’Reilly will say something, knowing from his sometimes cliché style,  about how he escaped death once but can’t escape it now. I also predict that it will talk a lot about what Kennedy did in office seeing that there are still a good bit of pages left and it cant be all about his assassination. I am enjoying the read for now.
